Headphone and Earphone Buyer’s Guide

Buying a brand new set of headphones or earphones will dramatically improve the sound quality from your iPod, iPhone or music player. But with so many different types of headphones on the market, it can be a complex and dificult process to choose the right ones. We will guide you through the different types of headphones and earphones on the market today and furthermore help you buy the correct headphones that suits your needs.

The main decision you must make is ‘where and how’ you are intending to use your new headphones for instance, buying an expensive pair of full size set of Hi-Fi headphones are going to be useless if you are going to use them whilst running or outdoors. And conversely buying a set of sports earphones to use on overseas flights or long journeys would be useless since they do not block much background noise out. Since there is no one uniform way of measuring the specifications of headphones- especially regarding frequency-response numbers, it is best to test the headphones you want in person and if at all possible, test them with the music device you intend to use them with and furthermore listen to music that you know, so that you will be able to hear any differences from one headphone to another.

DJ Headphones

Buying the correct set of DJ headphones is essential to create a great performance. Whilst it is possible to DJ with a regular set of headphones, DJ headphones usually come with larger earcups which enables you to isolate background noise and sounds, enabling you to concentrate more on hearing cues from the club’s PA system.

The vast majority DJ headphones have a swivel/rotating earcup, this will help you compare the beats of a new track you are about to mix, with the music coming out of the club’s PA system at the same time and furthermore these types of DJ headphones will only have one cord coming out of the swivel earcup this is very handy since you won’t get tangled up as easy. A set of folding headphones are also a good idea since they occupy less space in your record bag or box.

When buying a set of DJ headphones it is important to choose ones which has a excellent frequency response, a lot of dance music and hip hop uses low frequency sounds- so a good set of headphones with great drivers will deliver a wider frequency response. Playing out in a nightclub or bar is usually very noisey so it is advised that you choose a set of headphones which can cut through any background noise and a good set of DJ headphone should be able to work at high volumes without distortion.

On-ear Headphones

On-ear headphones are the most popular type of headphone. They are also called ‘super-aural headphones’ or ‘earpad headphones’, some have medium sized earcups that literally rest on your ear while others have a larger cups like ‘full size’ headphones, but they still rest on the outer part of the earlobes.

The main advantages of buying a on-ear headphone are that they are comfortable, your ears are less likely to overheat compared to using a full size set of headphones and some models can fold up for easy transport. However the disadvantages of owning on-ear headphones are they not very good at isolating sound compared to full size headphones and some models have less powerful frequency response due to the size of the drivers.

The earbuds rest in the concha (the cupped area around the ear canal in the center of your outer ear). Many inexpensive earbud earphones are known to reproduce sound very poorly due to the size of the driver and the lack of producing a seal in the ear canal.

The advantages of buying a pair of earbud earphones are they are very lightweight and compact, they are cheap to replace and they don’t interfere with glasses, earrings & hats. The disadvantages of earbud headphones are the sound quality and bass response can be poor, some models can cause discomfort over extended periods of time and can be hard to insert or remove.

In-ear Headphones

In-ear headphones are small earphones that fit into and seal the ear canal (usually with the aid of silicone or foam ear tips), they are also called in ear monitors, IEM, earphones, ear canal headphones and canalphones. Like earplugs, in-ear headphones are very good at blocking out external noise.

Listening to music using in-ear headphones is a completely different experience to listening to music over a set of Hi Fi speakers, since the sound from a pair of in-ear headphones is being funneled directly into your ears, which can bring out small details which are otherwise lost over stereo speakers. Many in-ear headphones are based on technology developed for hearing aids so it is not surprising that the levels of sound reproduction are very high.

Some in-ear headphones have a bias in reproducing sound with great clarity and detail rather than powerful bass response, leaving your in-ear headphones sounding thin & tinny. More often than not, the reason why in-ear earphones may sound tinny is because of they are probably not sealing in your ear correctly. To overcome this it is worth trying out different size ear tips supplied with the in-ear headphones or investing in some after market foam ear tips.
